Web Navigation with Matthew Marco

Mr. Matthew Marco described web navigation as the theory and practice of how people move from page to page on the web. One way we can make websites more navigable is to know what's important. As web designers we need to evaluate information and use that information appropriately. Mr. Marco told us about something called card sorting which help us evaluate this information. People usually look to the top left part of the page right away. So we can put important information in those areas.

The first website that I chose was www.rolfnylinder.com. Rolf Nylinder is a videographer and video editor. He mainly shoots nature and fly-fishing videos. I chose his website because it is user friendly and straight to the point. For example, his home page has links to all his videos. The videos are also categorized by the type of video. For instance, they are labeled as fly-fishing, nature, advertisement, etc. Rolf's content is great for all users. Furthermore, you don't have to like fly-fishing or nature to enjoy his videos. The reason why is because they are done so great that anyone can enjoy them. Rolf also has an Instagram and a Facebook to keep in contact with his viewers. His Facebook is linked to his website as well. The four tabs he has on his website are home, contact, Facebook, and some Swedish word that I don't know. We learned that the Facebook and contact tabs are very useful.

The second website I chose was worldangling.com World Angling is a production team of fly-fishing guides that started shooting and editing their own fly-fishing videos. I chose this website because it is in my field, but also a great website for the user. They have their own photos as the background of their website and it is set up as a slideshow. This allows the viewer to view multiple photos while staying on the home page. It is also a very user friendly website that has their newest videos on the home page. Another cool thing that they do is they type up a paragraph or two about each video. I think this is a great idea because viewers like to read and learn more about the videos they're watching. Since they're a production team of fishing guides, they have a "Book a trip" tab on their website. This is great for business because people can watch the videos and get so excited that they book a trip. I know that if I ever go to the Florida Keys to take out a fishing guide, I'm going to call these guys.
